The Story
A brief history of cricket's greatest contest
The Origin — 1882
When Australia defeated England at The Oval, a satirical obituary
declared English cricket had died and "the body will be cremated and
the ashes taken to Australia." England's captain vowed to "recover
those ashes" — and a legend was born.
The Urn
The tiny terracotta urn — just 15 cm tall — remains permanently at
Lord's Cricket Ground, regardless of who wins. The teams compete for
the pride of holding the Ashes, contested every two years between
Australia and England.
The Format
A modern series consists of 5 Test matches. The team that wins more
matches wins the series. If drawn, the team that held the Ashes
retains them. It is the pinnacle of Test cricket.
